⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 10/10 – Blue Water Seafood, San Diego Blue Water Seafood was a wonderful return visit and did not disappoint. While visiting San Diego, we searched through old photos and realized we had eaten here seven years ago. The memories came rushing back, and we decided to visit again—and we’re so glad we did. The seafood was just as fresh, flavorful, and delicious as we remembered. Everything was prepared perfectly, and the quality of the food reminded us why this place stood out enough to make it into our photos years ago. The portions were generous, the atmosphere was casual and welcoming, and the service was friendly and efficient. It’s rare for a restaurant to live up to a memory after so many years, but Blue Water Seafood exceeded our expectations. Returning after seven years felt like reconnecting with an old favorite, and the experience was every bit as enjoyable as the first time. We’ll be sure to return on our next trip to San Diego.
Blue Water Seafood Market was an amazing spot for fresh seafood in San Diego. The food tasted incredibly fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. I especially enjoyed the fish tacos and seafood plates, and you could really tell the quality of the ingredients was excellent. The atmosphere was casual, relaxed, and welcoming, which made the dining experience even better. Even though the place was busy, the service moved quickly and the staff were friendly and helpful. Sitting outside and enjoying fresh seafood with the San Diego weather made the experience even more enjoyable. If you love seafood, this place is definitely worth visiting. The portions were generous, the flavors were great, and overall it was one of the best seafood experiences I had during my trip.
Food is delicious & the fish is fresh! We've had better clam chowder, but it was still good. The gal at the register was great - answered all our questions/gave her opinion between choices we were struggling on. She didn't make us feel rushed despite the growing line behind us (we were truly trying to hurry, though, because of it). If you like sashimi, get their sashimi appetizer! We haven't been able to find a good place for sashimi since we moved to Southern California 5 years ago. Don't get me wrong, we've gotten good sashimi, but not cut thick & with good quality that is worth the price like this place. The price wasn't even as high as many of the other sashimi places we've tried! They give you only 2 fish choices on the plate, however. They have listed about 5 or 6 different kinds on the menu, but it depends on what they have available for the day. We had salmon & tuna. Salmon is my favorite, but their tuna was fantastic! First time I can say I may have liked it better than the salmon!! Their other dishes we had were also yummy. My daughter loves scallops & they were cooked to perfection. I don't usually like scallops because most places cook them till they're rubbery. Not this place! My husband had swordfish & I had the sea bass. Both were also delicious, but I think they may have mixed up which plate went to which person. Good thing, as we were trying each others' food, my daughter noted the slight texture difference between the two (I hadn't had a chance to taste them yet). Interestingly, swordfish usually has a vastly different texture than bass, but here, they cook it so well, there wasn't a huge amount of difference! That says something since swordfish is usually very "meaty." If my daughter hadn't noticed, I wouldn't have complained even though I was looking forward to the bass. I like flakier fish. However, the bass wasn't as flaky as I anticipated, but both were so tender, the mix-up wasn't a deal breaker. I don't know how they season the rice, but YUM! Even though I'm Asian, I'm not one who usually eats the rice. It's usually just a filler for me, & since I don't eat much, I'd rather eat the "other stuff" & usually leave most of the rice. Not here! I almost couldn't get enough of it, lol! So good!! At the end, we needed boxes. We had to ask two different waitresses since the first one we asked never came with them. It's an "order-at-the-register-then-find-a-table" type of place, so there wasn't any "service" to speak of after you sit; the only thing they do is bring you your food. Otherwise, if something is needed, you have to "catch" someone as they're bringing out food to tables. Be prepared to stand in line to order - this place is popular for a reason! Parking is a challenge, but worth it. We definitely will be back!
The Hype Doesn't Quite Match the Hook I’m struggling to see why this spot is constantly topped with "must-visit" lists. My recent experience was a bit of a letdown, mostly due to a disconnect between the price point and the actual service provided. The Wait vs. The Value: There was a massive line just to get in, which I wouldn't mind if it led to a full-service experience. Instead, you wait forever for counter service, yet the prices on the menu definitely reflect what you’d expect to pay at a sit-down restaurant with a dedicated server. The Food: I ordered the fresh fish, and while it was perfectly fine, it wasn't "outstanding" or worth the long trek. It was "okay," but San Diego has plenty of fish joints that offer the same quality without the logistical headache. The Service (or lack thereof): This was the biggest frustration. I was told the outside gas heaters weren't working, so I was squeezed into a table for one right near the counter, basically staring at a wall while I ate. However, when I walked out after my meal, the outside heaters were clearly working and people were sitting comfortably. Being misled about seating just to tuck a solo diner out of the way felt like very poor service. Overall, it’s a "one and done" for me. There are too many great seafood spots in the city to deal with long lines and mediocre hospitality.
I really wanted to like this place! The staff were friendly and genuinely seemed to be trying their best🪷, and I could see that the restaurant was extremely busy. There is definitely potential here, which is why this review is a suggestion and opportunity to grow🌼 My first concern was cleanliness🤔. The table was noticeably sticky, and the restaurant felt overcrowded. Perhaps the staff were overwhelmed, but it did affect😣 the overall experience. I also found the seating arrangement very cramped. The tables are packed closely together, and while that’s obviously not the restaurant’s fault, I personally prefer places with a little more space and privacy💐 The main reason we came was the famous Tuna Melt. My husband had heard great things about it, and everyone seems to recommend it. Unfortunately, it was a major disappointment. What I don’t understand is the design of the sandwich 🥪 itself 🍣 Why use thick white bread 🍞 for something that is already so rich? I’s use a multigrain bread with more texture and flavor😉🌻 I suggest toasting it until crisp instead of grill it with so much butter 🧈. The sandwich 🥪 starts with buttery white bread 🍞 , followed by a thick layer of melted cheese 🧀 , followed by a very generous amount of tuna 🍣 filling. Individually, none of those ingredients are bad. Together, however, the result was overwhelmingly heavy and greasy. I kept asking myself: where is the balance? How about adding some lettuce 🥬 , cucumber 🥒 , tomato o, or something fresh to cut through all that richness? Sounds good to me 🙂 The sandwich was also enormous. I could barely finish half of it. It felt less like lunch 🥗 and more like a digestive challenge😅 Ironically, my favorite part of the meal was the spring salad 🥗 . It was fresh, crisp, and served with a lovely vinaigrette dressing . Honestly, that salad 🥗 was doing heroic work trying to balance the rest of the plate. Unfortunately, I felt unwell afterward. We had lunch around 2 PM, yet I struggled with indigestion for the rest of the day and slept poorly that night because the meal felt so heavy on my stomach😣 I appreciate the effort from the staff, and I can see why this place has loyal customers🌻. However, between the cleanliness concerns, the crowded atmosphere, and the food🍱 itself. I’m sure 👍 you guys can improve!
